Danish warships are participating in a major NATO exercise off the coasts of Norway and Scotland

The frigates Iver Huitfeldt and Absalon are participating in an exercise aimed at training NATO countries' missile defense at sea

The two Danish frigates, Iver Huitfeldt and Absalon, are participating in a NATO exercise that begins Saturday off the coasts of Norway and Scotland.

This is according to the Danish Armed Forces' website.

The purpose of the exercise, named "Formidable Shield 25," is to train NATO countries' missile defense at sea.

The exercise aims to test the ships' ability to respond to all types of airborne threats, including anti-ship missiles and ballistic missiles.

In addition to Danish warships, warships from the USA, Canada, France, the UK, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain are also participating.

A number of land and air forces are also involved in the exercise, though the exact number is not specified in the report.

- The exercise is a demonstration of NATO’s capability to wage war, maintain military readiness, and be combat-ready, the Danish Armed Forces writes.

The task, according to the Armed Forces, is "both the protection of other ships and the safeguarding and protection of land areas through air defense, which not only covers the ships at sea."

- By training together with other allied NATO countries, the ability to act and operate together in the event of an escalated situation is ensured, it adds.

The exercise is led by the U.S. Sixth Fleet, though Denmark has a representative in the staff controlling and managing the exercise and commanding the participating ships.

The NATO exercise will take place from Saturday until May 23.
