The date is now set for the debut of a new battery ferry in Danish waters

With two delayed newbuilds, Molslinjen must reorganize its ferries to keep the sailing schedule on track

June 16.

That will – hopefully – be the day when Molslinjen's new electric ferry Nerthus makes its debut in Danish waters.

However, it will happen in a slightly different location than originally planned.

Nerthus was built to handle traffic between Bøjden and Fynshav, but initially, it will operate on the route between Kalundborg and Samsø.

Samsø is a destination where passenger numbers increase significantly over the summer, so we need to deploy a ferry with more capacity. That’s why we are taking Alslinjen’s ferry and assigning it to Samsø CEO of Molslinjen, Kristian Durhuus.

This is a workaround Molslinjen has had to implement to keep the summer sailings on schedule, according to a press release from the ferry company.

As a result, residents of Als will have to wait a little longer for their new electric ferry.

Two delayed ferries

Delays at the shipyard in Turkey, which is building the two electric ferries, have forced Molslinjen to make a minor ferry reshuffle.

The company was supposed to receive a new ferry, Nerthus, for Alslinjen before Christmas, but construction delays have pushed delivery into 2025.

The same applies to Molslinjen’s new Samsø ferry, Tyrfing, which is set to operate between Kalundborg and Ballen. It was originally scheduled for delivery just after the New Year but has also been delayed.

Molslinjen had hoped both ferries would be ready for the Easter travel season, but that didn’t happen.

Instead, they are now aiming for mid-June for Nerthus.

On Monday, sea trials began for Nerthus in the waters around the Turkish shipyard Cemre, where both ferries are being built.

The company has not yet announced a launch date for the Samsø ferry, Tyrfing.
