The family dynasty in Hong Kong began as Shipping Company Jebsen in Aabenraa

While Denmark had been among the leading sailing ship nations in trade with China during the 1700s and 1800s, steamships began to be the preferred choice for long voyages. The Danish captain Michael Jebsen dared to make the leap from sail to steam and founded the first steamship company in Aabenraa in 1878.

When the fourth generation of the Jebsen dynasty gives a tour at the headquarters in Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, there is no doubt that the shipping company has played a quite significant role, even though it was shut down over 40 years ago.

It was Hans Michael Jebsen's great-grandfather who, in 1878, founded Rhederi Jebsen with ships under the German flag, since Aabenraa at that time was part of Germany. Captain Michael Jebsen had already by that time navigated sailing ships to distant shores and transported goods between the continents, and as was common at the time in Aabenraa, he also had shares in the ships he sailed with.
