The world's first ship tunnel will soon be up for bid

The Norwegian Coastal Administration will put the construction of a 1.7 km long tunnel through a mountain out to tender before Christmas

The Norwegian Coastal Administration is planning to put the construction of the world's first ship tunnel out to tender before Christmas this year.

This is according to Teknisk Ukeblad.

The planned tunnel will be 1.7 km long and will pass through the Stadlandet peninsula, allowing ships of up to 20,000 gross tons to navigate through the area.

The tunnel is expected to be completed by 2030, provided the timeline is adhered to.

The area, known as Stadhavet, is considered the most dangerous and weather-beaten coastal area along the Norwegian coast. In some years, there have been recorded 100 stormy days, and since World War II, 34 seafarers have lost their lives in shipwrecks in Stadhavet.

The Stad Skipstunnel will have a length of 1,700 meters, a sailing height of 37 meters, and a sailing width of 26.5 meters. The water depth will be 12 meters.
