ABB completes acquisition of Høglund to expand marine automation offering
ABB has finalized its acquisition of marine automation specialist Høglund AS headquartered in Tønsberg, Norway. The transaction was completed September 1st 2026, following the announcement of the agreement published on June 26th.
Complementing ABB’s existing marine automation offering and supporting growth across a wide range of vessel segments, the newly acquired business includes Høglund’s global operations, with a total of 85 employees in Norway, Poland, Romania, and China.
“By adding Høglund’s automation platform as a solution to ABB’s product portfolio, we combine advanced marine automation capabilities with global reach and an extensive service network, creating a powerful competitive advantage,” said Rune Braastad, President, ABB’s Marine & Ports division. “This gives us the opportunity to grow our automation portfolio, address a wider range of vessel types, and serve their evolving needs even better than before. I’m delighted to welcome our new colleagues from Høglund. Together, we will drive innovation and create lasting value for shipowners, operators, and yards.”
“For me, today marks a recognition of the automation technology, expertise, and experience we have built at Høglund over the past 30 years,” said Peter Morsbach, Chief Executive Officer, Høglund. “As we take our next steps together as part of ABB, I am excited to build on the strengths of Høglund and ABB together, advancing marine automation for the benefit of customers worldwide.”
Høglund’s integrated Automation System (IAS) is based on ABB’s control system hardware, making it a natural fit within the ABB automation portfolio. Designed for the demands of modern vessels, the modular and scalable IAS is currently installed on board more than 600 ships. It combines data from engines, generators, and cargo systems to help improve safety, energy efficiency, and operational performance.
“A warm welcome to everyone at Høglund,” said Saara Kuusisto, Global Business Line Manager, Marine Systems, ABB’s Marine & Ports division. “Together, we will strengthen our automation expertise and expand our capabilities to deliver even more comprehensive integrated solutions to ships worldwide. We will build on Høglund’s distinctive values while continuing to focus on what matters most to our customers.”
