Back End Developer - Data Scientist

Are you interested in helping people safely, sustainably and economically navigate inland waterways? Are you interested in employing data to create predictive models employing historical figures, millions of daily data points, meteorological input and AI to support inland shipping with insights into current and predicted water depths for various large and small rivers? Then this could be the absolute perfect job for you!

We are looking for a Back-End Data Scientist responsible for managing the interchange of data between servers and end- users. One of the key challenges we are working to incorporate is developing and integrating predictions of water depths for the next 4 to 6 days while steadily developing models for up to 6 weeks of forecasts.

You will be working broadly within an existing team of developers, but with a focus on developing new (predictive) insights that will meet the needs of our customers. In addition, these new insights can lead to new insights. We must connect as much as possible to other systems that are used onboard or are being developed for (semi-autonomous) inland shipping in the future so developing within cooperative structures is a future possibility.

At the moment we offer insight with, for example, electronic navigation charts (bIENCs), interactive dashboards, and easy-to-use APIs. But the possibilities with our unique source of information are of course suitable for much more than that. And that is what you will be working on. For example, can we predict what the bottom of the river will look like in a week, can we give an autonomous ship a dynamically adjusted optimal sailing line? Or perhaps we should think of a completely different visualization of the same information, 3D?

In addition, we are always busy optimizing our processing process. Perhaps you have ideas to integrate external weather information, derive current data, perform trend analyses, or even change our entire process after an initial introduction.

Professional Competencies

  • You have affinity with ships, hydrography, navigation, or water in general. We will get you up to speed so that our information perfectly matches the needs of the user and other parties.

  • Much of our information has a spatial factor. Preferably, you have experience with applying geographical or geometric analyses. Also consider, for example, the properties of GNSS, (vertical) reference surfaces or spatial interpolation.

  • Mastery of the Dutch and/or English language. Preferably also German.

  • We are always on the move and looking for new challenges. You have the creativity to come up with solutions for this, but are also able to implement them directly in our automatic process.

  • At least basic experience in Python and C#/.NET, to immediately test your new solution. This does not have to be perfect, because you also have colleagues for that. Preferably you have experience with processing geo-data and using geographic databases.

  • Understanding accessibility and security compliance

  • Developing scripts to bring together and structure data from different sources

  • Creating datasets useful for analysis

  • Developing algorithms and (machine learning) models to process data

  • Applying statistical methods and machine learning algorithms to discover patterns and trends in the data

  • Developing predictive models and algorithms that help companies make better decisions

  • Designing big data infrastructures and integrating data management technologies

  • Integration of multiple data sources and databases into one system

  • Data migration, transformation, and scripting

  • A good understanding and up-to-date knowledge of AI in general, machine learning and neural networks as well as their implementation

  • Employ strategic thinking to drive continuous growth and innovation.

  • Skilled in managing complex projects

Covadem offers an attractive compensation package matching your skills and experience. Working in a small TEAM of developers who like to have personal interaction.

About Covadem
CoVadem is a unique and innovative company that emerged from an initiative of the research institutes MARIN and Deltares, Autena, Bureau Telematica Binnenvaart (BTB) and various inland shipping entrepreneurs.

With a 'floating measurement network' of more than 300 ships, we combine the measured data with public data using big data techniques and smart algorithms and provide inland shipping with an electronic water depth map every day, but also provide advice on a possible unloading depth for its upcoming journey.

In addition, we regularly supply data to waterway managers such as Rijkswaterstaat, and to research institutes and universities for research purposes.
