On behalf of our local partner, who represent a world leader in dry bulk commodity trading, based in Geneva, MARPRO is looking for a talented individual, who is interested in working for a successful trading house.

Our client is seeking a dynamic individual that has a proven track record within handy/supramax dry cargo market. In this position you will be required to optimize the freight system around the existing cargo program primarily based on own and in-chartered tonnage. Your main purpose is to support the existing business and the immediate growth plan with cost-effective freight solutions. In future the role could evolve into running a successful book sourcing both tonnage and cargo internally as well as for third parties.

For this position, you will have strong market awareness with contacts on both the tonnage and cargo sides. Strong knowledge of the underlying commodity markets would be beneficial but is not essential for this position. Knowledge of hedging freight through FFA’s is essential albeit actual FFA trading is not.

To be a suitable candidate you must have a proven background as a Chartering Manager within the handy/supramax dry bulk sector negotiating voyage and time charter contracts with minimum four years of chartering experience. The successful applicant will be highly responsible and motivated individual with an established network. You will be a skilled negotiator with excellent analytical skills who work effectively under pressure.

Your key responsibilities:

Pricing of Freight and Rate Negotiation:

  • Work closely with in-house traders to attend to their enquiries as well as communicating relevant market information back to commodity traders
  • Negotiate and execute physical freight contracts with ship owners and brokers on a spot and long-term basis
  • Monitor in-house chartered vessels, continually reviewing market conditions, rates and availability of tonnage
  • Maintains and seeks to build new relationships with external 3rd party charterers, with a view to access profitable cargo trading opportunities, including COAs.
  • Analyse and work collaboratively with research team and communicates with other internal freight traders’ market to profitably create value for the team and the global freight book. Must be ready to accept additional project work required by management.
  • Maintains and seeks to further extend network of reliable freight providers to facilitate internal commodity sales in all pricing climates

Your qualifications

  • First class relationship management skills
  • Excellent communication skills and fully proficient in English both verbally and written
  • Can-do attitude and strong execution skills. Can act individually and work as a team
  • Growth Mindset with an attitude grow and develop in the role and within the organisation
     

Essential Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years relevant chartering/trading experience, other relevant experience will also be considered
  • Bachelor’s degree in Numerically based subject or other business discipline. Alternatively, other higher education. Can be flexible on this for the right candidate.
  • Extensive experience performing advanced freight calculations including arbitraging freight positions on spot and forward markets.
  • As a minimum being familiar with FFA’s
  • Basic understanding of MS Excel and preferably a superuser
  • Technologically curious and proficient – any coding experience a plus but not a requirement
  • Experience using Softmar or Imos systems is a plus but not a requirement
