Terror on Bornholm

Dr. Bruce Peter Forfatter, Glasgow: The risk of a terrorist attacking shipping from the breakwater in Rønne is infinitesimally small.

On a warm and sunny July day, Rønne on Bornholm is a pretty town, its red-roofed houses, church spires and lighthouse glowing warmly in the afternoon light. The best view of the town is from the harbour breakwater, where the lifeboat station, with its neat lawn and carefully tended flowers, is also located. For as long as the breakwater has existed, locals and tourists alike have gathered there most summer afternoons to enjoy the scene as ferries, yachts and other vessels arrive and leave. Now, in 2013, twelve years after 9/11, the owner of the breakwater, Rønne Havn A/S, has decided in its infinite wisdom that the threat posed by terrorism is now so great that it must be included in the port’s ISPS protection zone and so the public is no longer officially allowed to come there.
