Shipping giants on their way with nine groundbreaking ammonia-powered ships

A Japanese-Belgian partnership will build the industry's first ammonia-powered bulk and chemical ships for delivery in 2028-2029

Japanese Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Belgian CMB Tech (CMB) have entered into a partnership for joint ownership and leasing of nine groundbreaking newbuilds capable of running on ammonia.

The parties announced this in a press release on Monday.

According to MOL, the agreement includes three Newcastlemax bulk carriers with dual-fuel ammonia propulsion and six chemical tankers, two of which will have dual-fuel ammonia propulsion, while the rest will be prepared for ammonia operation.
